National food sanitary safety agency ANSES, in its submission 2020-SA-0043 dated 27th March, 2020, highlights the risk of spreading sewage sludge during the COVID-19 pandemic and makes recommendations on the sanitization of sewage sludge potentially contaminated by SARS-CoV-2. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Ministry in charge of the Ecology and Solidarity Transition take up these recommendations in an interministerial circular issued on 2nd April, 2020.
Among the main methods recommended for sanitizing sludges, ANSES reminds us that liming is a suitable solution.
Sanitization has been studied in respect of many pathogens, including viruses. The studied processes, including the use of sanitizing agents, would significantly reduce or even eliminate SARS-CoV-2 levels.
As regards the sanitizing of sludge by liming, ANSES defines a contact time between lime and sludge of around 10 days at pH 12 for adequate sanitization.
Our French-made HYGIACAL® range of biocidal limes will meet your requirements
We are ready to hear from you if you wish to study liming solutions that will allow you to continue spreading in spite of the pandemic situation.
